Historical Timeline

1956 - log house 01In 1955, First Baptist Church of Crestview recognized a need for a church in the northeast section of town.  When the matter was placed before the deacons, Mr. John Kennedy offered to sell a log house that he owned, and FBC purchased the house along with the lot belonging to the property.

In late 1955, the FBC Missions Committee chose the site that eventually became Woodlawn Baptist Mission.  They purchased four lots facing Ferdon Boulevard.

On the first Sunday in January 1956, 58 people met at the old log house for Sunday School and Worship.1957 - 1st groundbreaking

On October 20, 1957, the mission became Woodlawn Baptist Church with a membership of 40.

In 1957,  Woodlawn started the foundation for the first two units of the education building.

On December 14, 1958, the auditorium section of the education building was completed, and the church held a dedication on its third anniversary on January 5, 1959.

1966 - sanctuary 01From 1963-1965, Woodlawn experienced tremendous growth, and the need for a new sanctuary became apparent. Services were held in the new auditorium on the first Sunday in July 1966.

On February 3, 1980, the church held a ground-breaking ceremony for a new Fellowship Hall.

On December 10, 1986, the church voted to accept the architectural design for a second story addition above the Fellowship Hall. This addition, which provided much needed Sunday School classroom space, was occupied on October 1, 1987.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the present worship center was held on December 13, 1998.

Woodlawn ExteriorOn March 5, 2000, the church body met for the morning service in the new worship center.   A record-breaking 576 people attended Sunday School and 976 attended the service requiring extra seating in the aisles.  The dedication service was held on April 16, 2000.

In April 2004, the church remodeled the old sanctuary in order to add additional Sunday School classrooms and a gathering space for the youth and children.
